Is truck driving a good career move?

I would like to become a team driver with my husband, we have driven all over the darn place in my car, and the career is very much making us both seriously consider it. We like to drive, we have no problem being on the road alot, we don't have many family commitments, and we want to become owner operators in the end, BUT, we wanted to hear from people doing it to find out if all the things we have been told is true.

A) We know Owner Operator is costly, but we are still leaning toward it for many reasons.

B) We are being told the average is 40k a year for a driver, is this true?

C) Is their anything we really need to be aware of that we are not. We are aware of long hours, many driving hours, being cramped up in the truck together, and so forth, is their something else we need to be aware of before we pay for school?

Truck driving is not a bad choice. You get to see the country and get paid for it. My husband is a driver. I went with him for a couple of years, and found that it is not right for me, though. Something to keep in mind being an O/O: keep about half of the money the two of you earn back for expenses on your truck. If you don't you can become tieds up in a truck that can not be serviced, flat tire, etc. Good luck.

Oh, and by the way, there is good money to be made there. My husband is no longer OTR, and still makes close to 60,000. Teams can make 200,000 or more if they get the miles. And if you really want to make GOOD money, look into driving for a truck dealership. You deliver the trucks, sleep in hotels, fly back. Single driver can make 175,000 per year.

Good luck!

Reply:Truck driving is NOT a good career choice - unless you plan on making a few extra $$ as a lot lizard.
Reply:Nothing wrong with it, you go for it and ignore some of these lazy (non-working) negative people on here.

My older brother is a police officer, me a teacher, my next brother is a business man and the youngest one is a long distance lorry driver ... Guess who is the most happiest and cheerfull living life with no extra worry? ... Yes, the lorry driver and he earns quite a good wage.
Reply:I think the income is more like 60000 for one driver. My son loves it.
